The MataCare Grant exists to help students with unexpected urgent financial needs. The MataCare Grant Fund was established through generous contributions from alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends of the university who want to assist in removing unanticipated financial roadblocks to student degree completion and well-being. If awarded, you will be asked to submit a thank-you letter to our donors.

To be eligible to receive a MataCare Grant a student must:

  • Be a matriculated CSUN student in good academic standing. Students enrolled through Open University are not eligible.
  • Be enrolled in required minimum of units (6 units undergraduate and credential; 3 units for graduate, certificate)
  • Have paid all outstanding charges to the university in full or be up to date on payment plan
  • Be able to demonstrate an urgent financial need (must provide supporting documentation where appropriate)
  • Have exhausted all sources of financial assistance and aid, including accepting a Direct Subsidized Loan
  • Be in good conduct and academic standing (2.00 GPA. undergrads; 3.00 GPA credential, graduate, certificate)
  • Have not previously received two MataCare grants

Applications must include a statement explaining the emergency that created the emergency need and how the grant will be used as well as documentation that supports the request. Documentation can include receipts, bills, leases, police reports, pay stubs, letters, news reports, obituaries, etc. If documentation is unavailable, your statement should explain why there is no documentation. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

The MataCare Grant is not a loan and does not need to be repaid. These grants are meant to address urgent one-time needs not recurring or expected expenses. Students with ongoing issues should meet with a financial aid counselor to develop long-term solutions.

  1. The National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences (NACCAS) is an autonomous, independent accrediting commission constituted as a nonprofit Delaware corporation, with its main office located in Alexandria, Virginia.
  2. Funds are used to support or establish campus-based child care programs primarily serving the needs of low-income students enrolled in IHEs. Grants may be used for before- and after-school services. In addition, grants may be used to serve the child care needs of the community served by the institution.

The amount of a MataCare Grant depends on the nature of an individual request, documentation provided and the availability of funds. If approved, applicants will be notified of the outcome by email and funds will usually be issued the following week. In March, Congress passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which included funding to assist students through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund. SU has been granted a pool of CARES Act Emergency Grant funds to provide emergency financial aid grants to students for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the coronavirus.

Additional CARES Act funding has been allocated for SU emergency aid applications. Students meeting enrollment, U.S. citizenship and satisfactory academic progress requirements who are Title IV eligible and have incurred an economic hardship or expenses due to the disruption of campus activities directly related to COVID-19 may apply for reimbursement through this fund.

  • How to apply for SU Emergency CARES funding

    The SU Emergency CARES Grant is provided by the U.S. Government to support students that have been negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. This funding is available through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund authorized by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

    These emergency grants will assist students experiencing financial hardships with expenses related to the *disruption of campus operations*, including eligible expenses under a student’s cost of attendance such as (not a complete list):

    • Assistance with the purchase of food,
    • Needs related to housing/rent/utilities,
    • The purchase of additional course materials as a result of changing to the online format
    • Technology related needs,
    • Assistance with health care and/or child care expenses.

    Note - Students or parents who have experienced a job loss or income reduction would not be eligible to recoup lost wages for this emergency grant funding.

    Note: These funds cannot be used to pay an outstanding balance at Salisbury University related to tuition, fees or any other charges.

    Who is Eligible for the SU Emergency CARES Grant?

    • A student must meet all criteria listed to qualify:
    • A student who is currently enrolled in an SU degree or certificate program for Fall 2020.
    • A student who has been adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and has an emergency need.
    • Must be a US citizen or must meet the definition of an eligible non-citizen based on federal financial aid requirements.
    • The funds must be used to cover expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the coronavirus that have impacted a student's educational experience, including the allowable expenses listed above.
    • While these emergency grant funds are not Title IV aid, all Federal eligibility requirements still apply, CLICK HERE for the full list of Federal aid requirements.

    Who is Not Eligible for the SU Emergency CARES Grant?

    • Students enrolled in a non-degree program.
    • Students that are enrolled in dual and/or concurrent courses (high school).
    • Students enrolled exclusively in an online program (i.e., in all online classes) for Fall 2020.
    • International students.
    • Students who are not currently meeting the satisfactory academic progress minimum requirements for federal financial aid
    • Students who are graduating this spring semester as they will be considered as separated from the university and no longer an active student

    Apply for CARES Grant:

    • Students need to apply using the SU Emergency CARES Grant application.
    • Requests for funding assistance will be reviewed by the SU Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships.
    • Students may be asked to provide additional information or documentation to support their request.
    • Funding is limited and not all requests will be granted.
    • Applications received by September 15, 2020 will receive first priority.
    • Applications close September 18, 2020.

    When you log on the SU Scholarship Website Academic Works you will be prompted to complete a short General Application if this is your very first time logging in. Please complete the short General Application as instructed. Once you complete this, or if you have done it previously, you will then see a list of any recommended scholarships for which you appear to meet minimum qualifications by the system. If you are not recommended to apply to the CARES Student Emergency Grant, at this point, you do not meet minimum qualifications to be eligible.   • What is the CARES Emergency Student Grant?

    The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, recently signed into law, provided funding to allow Salisbury University the ability to award emergency financial aid grants to students to cover expenses related to the disruption of normal campus operations due to the coronavirus.

  • What types of expenses qualify to be covered by CARES Emergency Student Grant?

    Expenses that qualify for coverage through the CARES Grant include housing, food cost, travel, technology, health care, childcare and other costs related to the disruption of campus operations as a result of the coronavirus. The grant is not to be used for tuition and related fees.

  • Can the CARES Emergency Student Grant be used to satisfy an account balance at SU?

    No, the full amount of the CARES Grant will be given directly to the student and will not pay an outstanding balance owed to SU. Any outstanding balance owed to SU remains the responsibility of the student.

  • How do I qualify for the CARES Emergency Student Grant?

    Recipients of the CARES Act Emergency Financial Aid Grant must meet these minimum requirements for consideration:

    • Must be enrolled for the Fall 2020 semester in a degree program.
    • Must be eligible to participate in Title IV Federal Financial Aid Programs:
      • Must have a valid FAFSA on file at Salisbury University for the 2020-2021 academic year.
      • If selected, must have completed all necessary verification requirements.
      • Must be enrolled in a program leading to a degree.
      • Must be meeting satisfactory progress standards.
      • Must not be in default on a Title IV loan.
      • Must be a U.S. citizen, national, permanent resident, or other eligible non-citizen.
    • Must have expenses related to the disruption of campus operations as a result of the coronavirus.
  • How is Salisbury University awarding the CARES Emergency Student Grant funding?

    Salisbury University is awarding the CARES Emergency Student Grant funding in a two-phased process:

    Phase 1: Salisbury University has already awarded a large portion of the funding based on information already available in our system. Students meeting the following criteria have received a credit posted to their student accounts and refunded through the standard Bank Mobile refund process:

    • Currently enrolled for the fall 2020 semester in a degree-seeking (non-online) program.
    • Eligible to participate in Title IV Financial Aid Programs (see above).
    • Valid FAFSA on file for 2020-2021 academic year.

    Phase 2: The remaining portion of CARES Act Emergency Financial Aid Grant funding will be awarded via an application process. Qualified students can apply for emergency funding to cover expenses related to the disruption of campus operations as a result of the coronavirus even if they received an initial allotment through the automated process. Students are required to be current/continuing students to apply, therefore, students graduating in spring 2020 do not qualify for consideration for these additional funds. The application is available through SU’s Academic Works Website.

  • How is CARES Emergency Student Grant funding disbursed?

    Emergency grants will be processed based on your existing Bank Mobile refund selection. Funds will be directly deposited into bank accounts for students who are enrolled in the direct deposit option. Please allow 5-7 business days for your refund to process via bank mobile. To speed up your payment, we strongly encourage you to select a refund option if you have not done so by going here.   • Are there any categories of students who are ineligible to apply for CARES Emergency Student Grant funding?

    Yes. The following groups of students are not eligible to receive CARES Emergency Student Grant funding based on guidance from the Department of Education:

    • Students enrolled in a non-degree program.
    • Students who are enrolled in dual and/or concurrent courses. Ex: high school students enrolled in college courses.
    • Students who were enrolled exclusively in a fully on-line program on or before March 13, 2020.
    • International students.
    • Students who are not currently meeting the satisfactory progress minimum requirement for federal financial aid.
  • What is the application deadline for CARES Emergency Student Grant funding?

    Applications received by September 15 will receive priority consideration for funding. The application will remain available until funds are exhausted.

  • What is the amount of the CARES Emergency Student Grant?

    Grant amounts will vary based on the needs of each student. The maximum grant amount is $1,000. Students who have received funding through the automated award process are eligible to receive additional funding through the application process.

  • When will decisions be made about CARES Emergency Student Grant recipients?

    Decisions about grants awarded through the application process will be made on a rolling basis. Students who apply should expect notification via email with 14 days.

  • Is CARES Emergency Student Grant funding taxable?

    No. Emergency financial aid grants under the CARES Act for unexpected expenses, unmet financial need, or expenses related to the disruption of campus operations on account of the COVID-19 pandemic, such as unexpected expenses for food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, or childcare, are qualified disaster relief payments under section 139 of the Internal Revenue Code. This grant is not includible in your gross income.
