Casino Night Will Ferrell
I've literally never met a person in my life who doesn't love Amy Poehler — and why wouldn't you? She's incredibly talented, hilarious, and down-to-earth. Frankly, there's really not a lot not to love. I love watching her in every single project she takes on, which is why I was so excited when I heard that she's in talks to sign on in the upcoming New Line comedy, The House. Will Ferrell is already on board, and Poehler would be playing his wife. A Saturday Night Live duo reunited for a comedy about gambling? Uh, hurry up and sign on the dotted line, Poehler!
The House is about a married couple that starts an illegal casino in their basement with the help of their neighbors, all because they lost their daughter's college fund through unknown circumstances. Can you not already picture the genius? If you're not already convinced, you should know that Ferrell is co-producing the movie with comedy mainstay Adam McKay, whose name you'll recognize from movies like Step-Brothers, Anchorman, and about a million more. Have I said enough yet?
Directed by Craig Gillespie. With Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, David Tennant, Toni Collette. When a nice new neighbor moves in next door, Charley discovers that he is an ancient vampire who preys on the community. Can he save his neighborhood from the creature with the help of the famous 'vampire killer', Peter Vincent? Other than a mere year of overlap on Saturday Night Live (which produced one of the greatest sketches of all time, “Short Shorts for the USA”) and mostly isolated screen time in the no-one. Jun 29, 2020 Less than a year after co-starring in A Night at the Roxbury, Ferrell appeared in this deeply silly reimagining of the Watergate scandal that starred Michelle Williams and Kirsten Dunst as. Funnymen and poker have been much in the news recently, with comedian Kevin Hart plying his skills at the table in some seriously big events, but it was comedy actor Will Ferrell who stole the show with his ‘great gambling story’ on Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show recently. The concept seems based on the idea that it might be funny to see Will Ferrell as a suburban dad do a take on Robert De Niro in 'Casino,' with ostentatious sunglasses, gory violence and all.
While the deal isn't official yet, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for Poehler to sign on to The House ASAP. It would be way too amazing.
She's The Perfect Balance For Ferrell
One of Poehler's great comedic talents is that she can balance pretty much any actor she's playing against. If Ferrell's character is more outlandish, Poehler does the straight man SO well. If he's the straight man, Poehler can pull out all the stops with ridiculous hilarity.
The World Needs More Movies Starring SNL Alums
I mean, right? Sure, some comedians who've come from Saturday Night Live haven't done all that well in the movie world, but there are some who took to the big screen like a fish to water, and both Poehler and Ferrell qualify here. I grew up watching these two on Saturday nights, so seeing them do bigger and better things is always exciting.

Can't You Just See Her Shuffling Cards At A Blackjack Table?
I don't know why this visual is in my head, but it is, so can we just go with it? She's little and spritely and I can totally see her as the blackjack dealer in her basement casino. The options for hilariousness are endless here. Go with it.
She's Got An Opening In Her Schedule... For Now
A quick peek at Poehler's IMDB page shows that she has nothing on tap just yet for 2016. Given that The House is still in development, it definitely won't be out this year, so the quicker they get Poehler on board, the better. Her schedule is likely to fill up quickly, so the time is right!
Every Comedy Needs Amy Poehler
Seriously, is there any other reason? I think not. Poehler makes everything she does just that much better, so any movie that has her in it is bound to be really, really good. Let's get this thing going!

Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler got their start in show business at the late night comedy institution known as Saturday Night Live. Since then the two have gone on to become two of the biggest comedy starts working today. However, despite their history together, they’ve only been seen in Blades of Glory and Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues with each other, and neither had them sharing much screen time. But they’ll finally take the lead together in a new R-rated comedy from the writers of Neighbors.
The House sees Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler as a couple of parents who discover that they’ve somehow blown through the college fund they started for their daughter. To ensure that their daughter still has an opportunity to follow her dreams, they decide to start an underground casino in their living room. But as the make more and more money, greed begins to transform them, and we can see that change taking place in The House first look photo that has been revealed.
Here’s the The House first look photo from Entertainment Weekly:
Comedy Movies Will Ferrell
If the photo wasn’t enough of an indicator, Will Ferrell explains that the two parents at the center of the story “basically become Sharon Stone and Robert De Niro in Casino.” The casino doesn’t seem to be the only thing that has Ferrell and Poehler acting wild though as Ferrell continues, “They’re dealing with the idea of being empty-nesters and what that’s going to do to their lives.”
Director Andrew Jay Cohen (who also co-wrote the script with Brendan O’Brien) says the couple begins to regress back to their more immature days. Specifically, Poehler’s character ends up living up to the nickname she was given from her youth: Smoke a Lot of Pot and Pee Outside Kate. It’s not the most clever or brief nickname (that’s probably the joke), but at least we know how she got it.

It appears that Cohen and O’Brien are tapping into the same comedic style they brought forth in Neighbors where the lead female character gets to have as much immature fun as the lead male. Poehler explains, “It’s not that typical thing with the wife rolling her eyes commenting on how dumb her husband is while the husband complains that his wife keeps him from having fun. Once we decided that, it changed the dynamic. We turn into criminals at about the same time. It just makes things easier.” That’s something that made the dynamic between Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne so great in Neighbors, and it’s nice to see that carrying over into a comedy like this.
You’ll also notice that Jason Mantzoukas (The Dictator, The League) has gotten in on the money-rubbing in this photo. He plays the couple’s “sad-sack gambling-addicted friend” who ends up enabling them in their greedy ways. Mantzoukas is a secret weapon in comedy, making the most out of even the smallest of roles. I can’t wait to see what he does with comedic talents like Ferrell and Poehler.
Otherwise, the rest of the cast includes Allison Tolman, Andrea Savage, Rob Huebel, Michaela Watkins, Steve Zissis and Kyle Kinane. With the first look photo arriving today, we should be getting the first trailer anytime now, so stay tuned.
The House arrives on June 30.
